Yellow Arrow Publishing is a Baltimore-based nonprofit focused on supporting and inspiring writers and artists identifying as women through access to publication and the literary arts. We offer a variety of internship opportunities to undergraduate or graduate students. Priority will be given to students at Maryland-based colleges and universities, but we welcome applicants from throughout the United States. Because Yellow Arrow is a small non-profit organization, our internships offer students the opportunity to participate in a variety of functional areas and gain a wealth of valuable experience in a short time. All internships are unpaid unless stated otherwise.

It takes diversity of thought, background, culture, and perspective to create an inclusive storytelling platform. Yellow Arrow supports women-identifying writers and artists from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes us stronger. Our writers and readers come from all walks of life and so do we. We are taking steps across our portfolio to increase representation and give greater visibility to the voices of underrepresented women storytellers by continuing to expand themes for journal submissions, inviting diverse writers to submit their work, partnering with diverse outlets, and deepening inclusion on our board. We know there is more to be done and we commit to cultivating progress together. For questions about internships, email admin@yellowarrowpublishing.com. The internship application is below.

Every writer has a story to tell and every story is worth telling.

Sydney, one of our 2022 interns, shared:

I loved my internship at Yellow Arrow during the Summer 2022. I felt that my advisors trusted me with a lot of important responsibilities, and that I was helping to make a real impact in the community. The team was also very accommodating with my interests. Although my role focused primarily on social media and event planning, I had the opportunity to copy edit forthcoming zines and chapbooks, which was awesome. More generally, I loved getting to know many different women writers involved with Yellow Arrow, and I came out of my internship feeling better connected to the literary world.

Internship Process and Timeline

We review every application we receive internally and aim to arrange interviews with as many candidates as possible, but sometimes due to the amount of applications received, we may not be able to individually interview every candidate. We begin interviewing candidates about two months prior to internship start dates and close applications for each period once a decision has been made. Please indicate all semesters you are available/interested on your application in case we have already filled roles for the upcoming internship period. If you only applied for one period in your internship application but are interested in others, send an email to admin@yellowarrowpublishing.com to let us know. If you need to inquire about the status of your interview, please do not hesitate to email us at admin@yellowarrowpublishing.com. If you haven’t heard from Yellow Arrow one month prior to the internship start date, that means all positions have been filled for the upcoming semester.

Our application and interview periods for internships are as follows:

  • Spring Internships (January to April)

    • Applications should be submitted by end of October

    • Interviews conducted in November

  • Summer Internships (May to August)

    • Applications should be submitted by end of February

    • Interviews conducted in March

  • Fall Internships (September to December)

    • Applications should be submitted by end of June

Summer 2024 internship applications are now closed as we finalize interviews.

Fall 2024 internship applications will open in May or June.

Internship Opportunities

  • Work focuses on the editorial process of publishing Yellow Arrow Journal, Yellow Arrow Vignette, and Yellow Arrow chapbooks, as well as workshop and program management and marketing.

  • Great candidates are students majoring in publishing, English/creative writing, or a related field. Students majoring in marketing, graphic design, or a related field are welcome to apply.

  • We also love help with in-person events, so local (Maryland-based students) are highly encouraged to apply!

Internship Requirements:

  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with a partnering school. We welcome the opportunity to partner with many colleges and universities, so if your school is not currently partnered with Yellow Arrow, please get in touch!

  • Students will generally be offered internships for a semester (spring/fall/summer), or about 16 weeks. After that time, we have plenty of volunteer opportunities for those wishing to stay connected to the organization.

  • Internships generally require about five to ten hours of work per week, but that may vary depending on projects. Students must be able to commit to the work in addition to pursuing their schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

  • Interns will generally meet with their Yellow Arrow supervisor biweekly throughout their assignment period.

  • Interns must support our mission of empowering and supporting writers who identify as women.

  • Interns who have a passion for writing themselves are highly encouraged!

Currently, Yellow Arrow partners with the following colleges and universities for internships:
