Author: Angela Acosta
Tell us about yourself: Angela Acosta (she/her) is a bilingual Mexican American poet and Visiting Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies at Davidson College. Her creative and academic work center on imagining possible worlds and preserving the cultural legacies of women writers. Her writing has appeared in Copihue Poetry, Shoreline of Infinity, Apparition Lit, Radon Journal, and Space & Time. She is the author of Summoning Space Travelers (Hiraeth Publishing, 2022) and A Belief in Cosmic Dailiness: Poems of a Fabled Universe (Red Ogre Review, 2023). She has published on female life-writing, poetry, and literary personas in Persona Studies, Ámbitos Feministas, and Feminist Modernist Studies. She has published the poem “A Centennial for Herstory" as part of the Yellow Arrow Vignette SPARK series in July 2023.

What describes your main writing space: Eraser dust, lamp, simplicity
Tell us about your publication: A Belief in Cosmic Dailiness: Poems of a Fabled Universe is a bilingual English-Spanish collection of Latinx Futurist poetry. Celebrate the dailiness of multilingual and divergent Latinx futures while seated around a campfire. The 26 poems and six translations in this speculative chapbook travel from the solar system to Andromeda to envision coming of age rituals, companionship, and the responsibilities of work and daily life around distant stars. This book is published by Red Ogre Review via a grant from the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association. The book is available on Amazon; 100% of the proceeds go to the author.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you: When I saw the call for submissions for Red Ogre Review’s speculative chapbook series, I was eager to finish putting together a collection I had been mulling over. After my full-length collection Summoning Space Travelers (Hiraeth Books, 2022), I wanted to put together a chapbook that leaned into possible Latinx futures and the dailiness of life in the future. As I share in my author's note, it was important for me to have this creative outlet while finishing the dissertation. Watching this collection take shape reminded me of the love and support I have received on my journey as a writer and now new faculty member.
What is your writing goal for the year: Right now I'm taking some time off after publishing this chapbook and completing my dissertation this spring. When I do have time to write, I've been honing my craft writing flash fiction and speculative short stories.
What advice do you have for other writers: I’d encourage writers to connect with writing groups. Joining Discord servers and Facebook groups helps newer writers find outlets for their work and hear opinions and options about publishers. I’ve appreciated having space to ask questions and gain an inside look at querying, writing, and editing.
What else are you working on/doing that you’d like to share: My chapbook Fourth Generation Chicana Unicorn will be published by Dancing Girl Press in the coming months!

Author: Ute Carson
Tell us about yourself: Ute Carson, a German-born writer from youth and an MA graduate in comparative literature from the University of Rochester, published her first prose piece in 1977. Writing since her youth, by the time she had found Yellow Arrow Publishing, she had widely published books, poetry collections, and essays. In the fall of 2020, Ute published with Yellow Arrow Journal (in Vol. V, No. 3, (Re)Formation) her poem "Risks Around Each Corner" and to her delight the following year her poetry collection Listen (2021) was published by them.
Where are you from: Ute resides in Austin, Texas, with her husband. They have three daughters, six grandchildren, a horse, and a clowder of cats.
What describes your main writing space: I write everywhere I can find space but as shown in the photo (right), I often have to share my desk with one of our cats.
Tell us about your publication: My new poetry collection In the Blink of an Eye has just been released by Kelsay Books. It contains a potpourri of themes from animals to children (grandchildren) and aging. It is available on Amazon and online with Kelsay Books. Signed copies are available from me directly.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you: I am 83 and I won’t publish too many more books, but I will continue to write. I am never at a loss for subjects and images.
What advice do you have for other writers: For new writers, I have only one piece of advice. Believe in your work and if you are satisfied with what you have written share it with an audience. Never get discouraged in your search for a home!

I wrote a short piece on the Yellow Arrow blog about revision in May 2022. My first book was To Drink from a Wider Bowl, winner of the Sinclair Poetry Prize (Evening Street Press 2022), and my new chapbook is On Shifting Shoals (Kelsay Books, January 2023). You can find my poems also in Poetry South, CALYX, NC Literary Review, Ocotillo Review, Whale Road Review, and many other journals and anthologies. I consider myself incredibly lucky to be retired, living by the ocean with time to write and explore poetry with many poets I’ve met online.
Where are you from: Prince George’s County, Maryland
What describes your main writing space: expansiveness, ocean, immensity
Tell us about your publication: On Shifting Shoals (Kelsay Books, January 2023) includes 24 poems I’ve written over the past decade of living by the ocean. It explores my experiences of life in a southern beach town—the amazing beauty and sense of renewal of the ocean, environmental concerns in a time of climate change, and the sometimes humorous, sometimes uneasy relationships among the people who live there.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you: When I moved to the North Carolina coast a decade ago, I started walking on the beach or riding my bike around my small town almost every day. I would take photos and started writing poems from those snapshots. The ocean, the people, the seasons—everything changes and invites new connections. Pretty soon I had a collection and I hoped it would appeal to anyone who never gets tired of the ocean.
What is your writing goal for the year: Erik Campbell once wrote, "I write poetry because I have a soul that needs a periodic tune-up." My goal is always that tune-up.
What advice do you have for other writers: Write as much and as often as you can, even if it’s just jotting thoughts in a journal. Take workshops if possible from poets whose work you admire and you will meet other poets with similar tastes to yours and they will be invaluable for supporting your writing and giving you honest feedback.
What else are you working on/doing that you’d like to share: I just keep writing. Lately it’s a lot about my concerns for the world we live in, how to live with the immense beauty and the immense cruelty that is everywhere.

What describe your main writing space: I write a lot about the outdoors and sit at a window looking at it when weather does not permit writing outside.
Tell us about your publication: One Bent Twig is poetry in praise of trees, from first loved trees to those endangered by climate change. It was published in January 2023.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you: I have always loved trees, practiced as a Master Gardener, and see impacts of climate change on trees.
What is your writing goal for the year: I'd like to write 200 new poems and 300 haiku.
What advice do you have for other writers: Keep at it. No matter what. Keep working.
What else are you working on/doing that you’d like to share: I'm a gardener . . . for butterflies. I work to eliminate invasives from my woods.

Tell us about yourself: I spent my childhood on a cattle ranch in Jackson, Montana and was one-time editor of Parabola Magazine, retiring to and living in Temecula, California. What describe your main writing space: Complete with cats.
Tell us about your publication: Double Stream is a collection of ekphrastic poetry based on paintings and drawings by my late husband, the French painter Paul Leon Reynard. It was published in November 2022 by South Forty Press.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you: My late husband, the French painter Paul Reynard, often asked me to write about his work, but I felt at the time that I didn’t know enough about art to do so. Fifteen years after he died, I started writing poetry, and it was at that time that I encountered the ekphrastic poetry of Rooja Mohassessy. I said to myself that I should write poems about my husband's art, and this book is the result of those efforts.
What is your writing goal for the year: To write more poetry.
What advice do you have for other writers: Send your best work out to online and print journals and don’t mind rejections—we all get them!
What else are you working on/doing that you’d like to share: I am reworking older poems that I had put aside.

Author: Miriam Edelson
Tell us about yourself: I am a neurodivergent writer, settler, and mother living in Toronto, Canada. My literary nonfiction, personal essays, and commentaries have appeared in The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, various U.S., U.K., and Canadian literary journals, and on CBC Radio. My first book, My Journey with Jake: A Memoir of Parenting and Disability, was published in April 2000. Battle Cries: Justice for Kids with Special Needs appeared in late 2005. I completed a doctorate in 2016 at the University of Toronto focused on mental health in the workplace. My latest book, The Swirl in My Burl, a collection of essays, was published in October 2022.

Tell us about your publication: It’s published by Adelaide Books of New York (October 2022), a creative nonfiction collection of personal essays exploring growing up, mental health, parenting, nature, and politics.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you? This book is a collection of essays that I’ve been writing over the last few years. Most were published previously in various journals, including “Art in the Maelstrom of Mothering” by Yellow Arrow in EMERGE: Coming into View.
What is a burl? A burl originates from a tree that is stressed. It may be caused by an injury, virus, or fungus. The burl is formed coming out of the side of the tree when the grain of the tree has grown in a distorted or unusual manner. It is a round knotty growth that when polished is full of swirls and beauty. There is an entangled splendor underneath the bark and craftspeople say that it can take 30 years for the burl’s full beauty to emerge.
The swirl in my burl is my life stories, my children, my joy and pain. Through my writing I shine a light on that jumble of memory, fact, and emotion, searching for truth. Like my stories and myself, the burl wood grain is twisted and interlocked, resistant to splitting. I look upon it with wonder as it teaches me to find strength in its misshapenness.
What is your writing goal for the year: To continue writing from the heart.
What advice do you have for other writers? Be persistent. Expect 10 rejections for every acceptance. Don’t lose hope!
What else are you working on/doing that you’d like to share: I am editing a new collection titled Deep Roots, New Threats: Confronting the Rise of the Right in Canada. I’ll need to fashion an introduction and conclusion for this project, as well as edit others’ work.

Tell us about yourself: I am honored to be a 2022 Writer-in-Residence fellow with Yellow Arrow, which also published one of my poems in the (Re)Formation issue of the journal. My novels include The Potrero Complex, The Nighthawkers, and Dreams of Song Times. My poetry, which has been published in a variety of journals in addition to Yellow Arrow, leans heavily on free-form prose poems that address psychological and political states of mind.
Where are you from: Baltimore, Maryland
What three words describe your main writing space: my dining-room table
What did you just publish: The Nighthawkers, published by The Wild Rose Press June 6, 2002. Find it at amzn.to/3JCaYGH.
Tell us about your publication: The Nighthawkers is a time-traveling paranormal romance that will, I think, appeal to poetry lovers because it’s full of rich imagery drawn from the wonders of archaeology. The “sounds” of poetry inform my fiction. As for the story, an archaeologist must choose between her handsome first lover and the irresistible stranger who helps her discover a powerful destiny. Sometimes, it takes a broken heart to discover your true destiny.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you: I had written a mystery-thriller that contained an archaeology-related subplot, and realized I loved the theme so much I wanted to put it front and center of a different book. I also wanted to write a romance novel, and so The Nighthawkers was born. A nighthawker refers to someone conducting an illegal nighttime search for ancient artifacts, usually buried underground on private land, and very often somewhere in the United Kingdom.
What is your writing goal for the year: To make headway on a challenging new novel, where I'm a bit stuck right now.
What advice do you have for other writers: Believe in your story, advocate for yourself, and don't take ‘no’ for a final answer.

Tell us about yourself: I am a writer in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to Mother Nature, I am the author of a children's literature collection, Little Thoughts, as well as two microchapbooks: A History of Rats (Ghost City Press, 2021) and As Long As Got Each Other (ELJ Editions, 2022). My poetry, stories, and essays have appeared in a variety of publications, and my poem, “Again, Begin” was included in Yellow Arrow Journal's RESILIENCE issue.

What did you just publish: Mother Nature (May 2022), self-published and available at clairemtaylor.com/books.
Tell us about your publication: Mother Nature is a hybrid chapbook of essays and poetry on motherhood and the postpartum experience. All proceeds are being donated to Postpartum Support International.
Why this book? Why now? How did it happen for you: This book is a culmination of three years of writing and a reflection on the emotional and psychological impact of early motherhood. Especially as my son gets older and more independent, I wanted a way to memorialize the experience of those early years. I chose to self-publish this collection so that I could donate any proceeds to supporting postpartum mental healthcare.
What is your writing goal for the year: I would like to find a publisher for my chapbook of prose poetry and complete a draft of a middle grade novel.
What advice do you have for other writers: Be wary of chapbook competitions. It may take a while and a lot of submissions to find a publisher, and those competition fees add up fast.
What else are you working on/doing that you’d like to share: I am the founding editor of Little Thoughts Press, a quarterly print magazine of writing for and by kids, and am currently working on our third issue. I am also excited to have my debut picture book set to be published in Summer 2023.
